Safety Switches
A safety switch (RCD) sits in your switchboard and watches for electricity leaking where it shouldn’t — through a faulty appliance, damaged cable, or a person. When it detects that leak it cuts the power in a fraction of a second, fast enough to prevent a fatal shock.
- A safety switch is not a circuit breaker. Circuit breakers protect your wiring from overload. Safety switches protect people. Plenty of older Geelong and Bellarine homes have a board full of breakers and not a single RCD.
- The wiring rules require them on new circuits — and on existing circuits when they’re altered or extended. If you’re renovating, adding a room, or upgrading your board, that’s the natural time to bring the whole installation up to standard.
- Test yours every three months. Press the TEST button on the switch itself. The power should drop out immediately. If it doesn’t, the switch has failed and needs replacing.
- Nuisance tripping usually means something real. A safety switch that keeps tripping is often picking up a genuine fault — a wet outdoor circuit, a failing hot water element, moisture in the roof space. We’ll find the cause rather than just resetting it.
